In this article, you'll learn what a social security number is and where you can get one.
A social security number (Sozialversicherungsnummer) is used for classification and clear identification in the insurance system and at the tax office (Finanzamt). It consists of twelve characters in total, 11 digits and the first letter of your birth name.
It is given to you when you receive your social security card (Sozialversicherungsausweis). You will receive it when you start your first employment, subject to social security contributions (sozialversicherungspflichtige Beschäftigung).
If you can't find your social security card, you can also find the number on your pension insurance notices or, if applicable on pay slips from previous employers.
You can apply for a social security card at the website for German pension insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung) or by requesting one from your health insurance company.
Since employment at Zenjob is exempt from social security contributions, you will not receive a social security number through your employment at Zenjob. However, Zenjob requires this number, and you will need to obtain a social security number if you haven't already received one.
